SCHOOL CURRICULUM
At Halidon Primary School we place a strong emphasis on the key curriculum areas of literacy, numeracy, science and history. Your child will be offered a well-rounded curriculum experience based on the Western Australian Curriculum and the Early Years Learning Framework. We place a strong focus on the explicit teaching of the ‘basics’ but also offer opportunities for children to explore and reach their potential in all other curriculum areas.
Our programmes have been carefully chosen and designed to provide your child with the opportunity to study a comprehensive range of subjects including Music, Physical Education and the Visual Arts. Your child will learn Japanese and be eligible to participate in the school choirs as well as playing interschool sport and taking part in various arts activities, exhibitions and competitions.
Our highly skilled teachers will engage your child in learning programmes that are adjusted to suit their learning needs. They will provide appropriate intervention strategies for those requiring additional help as well as challenging and stimulating programmes for academically talented students.
NUMERACY
Halidon Primary has adopted a whole school approach to teaching Mathematics through First Steps Strategies and the gradual release model of responsibility to enable students to develop increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills. Halidon PS uses the iMaths Program across the school to support learning in mathematics.
Teachers deliver a balanced numeracy program whereby all strategies are explicitly modelled for students and opportunities are provided to practise and consolidate skills.
Students participate in exciting learning activities and teachers provide activities to differentiate instruction within each lesson and across school years.
LITERACY
At Halidon we implement a whole school approach to teaching Literacy through First Steps Strategies and the gradual release model of responsibility. Students are offered learning experiences that connect with and challenge existing skills and values. Halidon PS uses the Sound Waves Program to teach Spelling and the Talk 4 Writing program is used from K-6. All students participate in Guided Reading.
Teaching and learning programs are balanced and integrate the three strands outlined in the West Australian Curriculum: Language, Literature and Literacy.
Teachers integrate critical and creative thinking in teaching and learning programs and respect and cater for individual differences. Halidon offers small group and individual instruction to those students requiring additional assistance.
